COVID-19 could trigger epidemic of stress in Jammu | With no high speed internet, people developing psychological issues amid lockdown | | Early Times Report jammu, Apr 21: Apart from proving apocalypse for the economy, the outbreak of COVID-19 is taking a psychological toll upon the residents of Jammu and Kashmir who already have been battling turbulent times due to the snapping of high speed internet since August last year. There are concerns mounting that the lockdown besides hitting the economy hard could unleash tumultuous era upon the people of Jammu and Kashmir as they have been at the first hand witnessing the communication gag post August 5, last year with till date no restoration of high speed internet decided by the authorities. "In the times of lockdown, internet and other modes of entertainment act as a primary source to decrease the intensity of stress that erupts due to being confined in homes. With the absence of high speed internet, there are students who couldn't avail the online classes, IT professionals not able to work from the homes and general masses not being able to keep themselves busy amid the current precarious period," says Virender Gupta, a Jammu based psychologist. There are also concerns as per the experts about how the ongoing pandemic can leave the people psychologically disturbed and could trigger massive outrage and drastic behavioural changes. "There are people who are worried that they cannot go out of their homes. They have the feeling of being caged and bewildered. Such an agony gets mounted when there are certain sections among them who are concerned that they cannot earn during these times and hence feel anxious over what future has in store for them. All such feelings compound into major stress outbreak and could possibly lead to mental imbalances," says a psychiatrist. There are meanwhile concerns that amid the gag imposed on high speed internet in Jammu and Kashmir, the psychological issues could only witnessed an unprecedented surge in the coming times. "Doing nothing is soul destroying and when there are no avenues available to communicate with the form on digital platforms, it is possible that an insurmountable predicament could be in the offing," says Imtiyaz Ahmad, a research student of Psychology in Kashmir. There are constant pleas being made for the restoration of high speed internet in Jammu and Kashmir with people citing studies of students and business activities as the primary reasons. However the government authorities haven't yet taken ay decisive measure in this regard. The Jammu and Kashmir administration ordered the continuance of 2G mobile data services in the Union Territory till April 27 even as there has been a growing demand for restoration of high-speed 4G internet in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic. Principal Secretary, Home Department, Shaleen Kabra said the internet speed on mobile phones will be restricted to 2G only. |
