Despite OHW Tank in vicinity, Surni villagers still crave for tapped water supply | | | ARUN JASROTIA
EARLY TIMES REPORT
UDHAMPUR, May 7: Turning on a tap to get clean water is a distant dream for the inhabitants of village Surni and adjoining areas in tehsil Ramnagar of Udhampur district as the Over Head Water (OHW) Tank constructed for the purpose of supplying tapped water has never been put to use for years together. After spending lakhs of rupees, the Jal Shakti (formerly PHE) Department had constructed an OHW Tank with an aim to provide clean and safe drinking water facility to the villagers of Surni and adjoining areas but till date no water was lifted to be stored in the tank and supplying the same to the locals. “The population of about two thousand souls living in the area has had no access to potable water so far as the Over Head Water Tank specifically built for supply of water has never been put to use. It is like a white elephant for us,” said the locals. “Due to the negligence of PHE department the villagers are forced to get drinking water from natural sources of water after covering long distances to fetch it back homes. It requires almost three to four hours for fetching water from the nearby spring,” they added. Om Prakash, a resident of Surni villages while talking to Early Times said that the area is struggling to get tapped water supply since independence but unfortunately the locals here are only fed with false assurances and no water. |
