Jammu, May 9: Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Reasi of Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Jammu (SKUAST-J) is promoting urban agriculture during the lockdown period. KVK, Reasi scientists are guiding the urban areas dwellers to grow the organic vegetables in their houses so that they can get the safe and fresh vegetables. According to Incharge, Sr. Scientist & Head of Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Reasi, Dr. Banarsi Lal urbanisation is increasing rapidly and space for the vegetables cultivation in the urban areas is decreasing. He said that KVK, Reasi scientists are guiding the people to grow the organic vegetables on their roofs of the buildings by using the coco-peat, compost and vermicompost in the pots, trays, buckets, tubs etc. He narrated that urban dwellers can effectively use the space of the roof buildings to grow the nutrition rich organic vegetables. He added that city dwellers they can grow all types of vegetables like tomatoes, brinjal, okra, capsicum, broad beans, snake gourd, ridge gourd, bitter gourd and pumpkin etc. on their roof and can mitigate their family nutritional need. He added that due to lockdown people are unable to move outside and they have enough time for performing different activities at their homes. At this time, urban dwellers can develop roof top vegetables/flowers gardening as their hobby. He narrated that insect-pests and diseases in the roof vegetables/flowers gardens can be easily managed. He also informed on hydroponics to grow the organic vegetables in urban areas. He said that urban agriculture can contribute to local economic development, poverty alleviation and social inclusion of the urban poor and women in particular, as well as to the greening of the city and the productive reuse of urban wastes.
