Many fish found dead due to chemicals in Mendhar River | | | M S Nazki Early Times Report
MENDHAR, May 9: A scourge of toxic synthetic chemicals is killing millions of fish in the Mendhar River. Pesticides draining from the farmlands of Mendhar and some illegal pickers have resulted in widespread fish deaths over the last many years, media experts say. In November last year more than five million fish were found dead with peculiar symptoms in the river. Many ducks were also reported to be dead or dying. Sources said that Public Health Service’s Division of Water Supply and Pollution Control said yesterday that chemists at the division and in the Food and Drug Administration had identified endrin, dieldrin, DDT and DDE in the fish. These pesticides are extensively used in spraying in River so far, it was said, at least two other substances remain unidentified and work on them is being pressed. “Some trace quantities of organic chemicals are normally present in drinking water supplies, and the levels found in the lower Mendhar river do not present any immediate health problem,” the Department of Health, Education and Welfare said yesterday. “Not too much is known about the effect of endrin and dieldrin on human beings. They’ll have to get really busy on that now.” The first heavy fish deaths in the River of Mendhar were observed recently. And it after endrin had been used to eliminate the water insect. Examination of fish, mud and the river water failed to disclose significant quantities of poison. Fishery Department has been failed completely to control on it.
