Ensure basic necessities for residents of Sec-7, Nanak Nagar : Munish urges admin | Locals express resentment over continuous neglect, seek attention | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, May 13: Editor-in-Chief, Early Times, Munish Gupta, has urged the administration not to deprive people of basic amenities like better roads, provision of proper sanitation and drainage system in various areas in Jammu so that the city remains in the forefront of getting a ‘Smart City’ tag. Munish, who would be contesting the forthcoming Assembly elections from Gandhi Nagar constituency said, “It is the responsibility of the government to provide basic amenities to the people but unfortunately the successive regimes have failed to do so as localities like Nanak Nagar area’s Sector-7 still crave for necessary facilities even as this part is surrounded by the plush colonies. I urge the administration to do the needful at the earliest so that people heave a sigh of relief.” He said that the residents of Sector-7, Nanak Nagar have been deprived of basic necessities including carpeted lanes, better sanitation and a well-equipped drainage system adding that at least something needs to be done to provide them with basic amenities, which they don’t have till now. Meanwhile, a large number of residents of the area while speaking to Early Times expressed their resentment over the continuous neglect they are facing at the hands of the authorities. “Our locality is in complete chaos as most of the lanes are in dilapidated condition having pot holes, drainage system is in disarray as there is problem of blockage due to garbage accumulation while insanitary conditions in the surroundings are order of the day,” the aggrieved residents said, adding that it seems that there is no end to our agonies. Several residents said that their lanes and by-lanes should be repaired as they are in a rundown condition for the last couple of years. While others pointed towards heaps of garbage and filth being dumped in vacant plots at various locations in the area. “Open dumping of waste is nothing but a breeding ground for fleas and mosquitoes which spread communicable diseases. The scattered filth and garbage is an open invitation to diseases like dengue which breaks out frequently, however, nobody bothers for the wellbeing of the residents,” said the residents. Several residents demanded that the locality should be well equipped with street lights as the safety of the inhabitants remain at risk in absence of proper lighting in lanes. While few others highlighted the problem of leakage in water supply pipes. They said that the matter was brought to the notice of the authorities concerned but no action was ever taken. Majority of the residents complained that nobody comes to listen to their grievances, neither from the administration nor from the politicians adding that the political class show their faces only when elections are round the corner and afterwards they never turn up. “The lanes and drains are in shambles. Drains are not cleared on regular basis while they are also not fitted with iron meshing due to which the children while playing in streets often fell into them,” said the residents.
