Transmit words into actions | | | Much hyped online education being provided to students of the government schools in Jammu region is just proving to be an eyewash. Everyone is aware of the fact that students in government schools are mostly the children of the poor people, who after the outbreak of COVID-19 are finding it very hard to feed their families. Asking parents to buy smart phones for their children amidst pandemic is asking for too much. The basic requisite for the online education are smart phones or other devices through which teachers can transmit their message. Even many teachers in far flung areas don’t have smart phones. Directorate of School Education Jammu (DSEJ) has tried to imitate the private schools but without having proper infrastructure at place for providing the online education. It seems that COVID-19 is there to stay and it won’t go away so soon. So, in order to keep students involved in studies the DSEJ will have to look for the means to make this system work. If the government is really concerned about making this online education system work then it needs to provide the smart phones to the students at subsidized rates and the students who are from a very poor background can be provided the devices free of cost. Making tall claims, which remain confined to papers only, are not going to help anyone’s cause. Recently, the Sikkim government provided tabs and other gadgets to the students so that they can carry on with their studies. The people at the helm need to come up with a proposal to help the students of the government schools. Entire world is suffering due to COVID-19, but the governments across the globe and the country have made means available for the students so that they don’t suffer. The Government of India has already unveiled a financial plan which includes online education also. Now it’s upto the people who are running the Education Department to seek funds for the students from weaker sections of the society. The schools where these students are enrolled have a complete data and it’s not that difficult to check the records online. But it needs an effort. Someone has to take a lead to ensure that students don’t remain deprived of their Right to Education. Appointing supervisors to check whether teachers are sending the links is not going to serve any purpose. Keeping a check on teachers is only half of the work done. We need to do something for the students. |
