1st time in country, GMC Srinagar starts Sero prevalence study of health care providers for SARS CoV-2 Infection Testing IgG levels | | |
EARLY TIMES REPORT Srinagar, June 14: Government Medical College Srinagar is conducting sero prevalence study among the health care providers of Srinagar district regarding SARS CoV-2 (Corona virus) Infection while testing immunoglobulin-G (IgG) levels in their blood.
As a collaborative research project by Departments of Community Medicine and Biochemistry, around 3,000 health care providers attending patients in Srinagar Hospitals and health centres would be tested for IgG levels which would tell about whether they have been infected in recent past with SARS CoV-2 and the degree of protection they have achieved. We shall be testing doctors, nursing paramedic, support staff of various Associated Hospitals of GMC Srinagar and various hospitals and health centres of Directorate of Health Services under CMO Srinagar.
The blood samples would be collected and processed by Department of Biochemistry GMC Srinagar in high throughput ARCHITECT immunoassay analyzer which has been shown to have 100% sensitivity and specificity after 17 days of SARS CoV-2 exposure and clinical symptoms, as reported by Journal of Clinical Microbiology of American Society of Microbiology in May 2020 while United States FDA and European Union (CE) has approved it and also ICMR has permitted use of USFDA approved machine. The study has been permitted and guided by Dr. Samia Rashid, Principal GMC and is approved by Institutional ethics committee of Government Medical College Srinagar while district magistrate Srinagar permitted it as it shall help the administration to take necessary measures based on its results, said Dr. S. Muhammad Salim Khan, head of the Department, Community Medicine, Government Medical College Srinagar.
Recently, Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) conducted nationwide study over 83 districts and hotspots, covering 26400 population and found an overall 0.73% prevalence of IgG positively while in Pulwama district, which was facilitated by Department of Community Medicine, GMC Srinagar for ICMR, showed a prevalence of 2% while Pulwama was considered a low prevalence district by ICMR while selecting it for the study.
The study is a part of bigger study which include sero prevalence of SARS CoV-2 Infection among general population of Srinagar district which shall commence soon while another study conducted in collaboration with Department of Chest Medicine GMC Srinagar on estimation of IgG levels against SARS CoV-2 Infection among individuals who have recovered from the Infection has already kick started today with collection of blood samples from many persons who were discharged from CD Hospital Srinagar few weeks back after recovering from SARS CoV-2 Infection/ COVID. |
