Precautions only can save lives | | | Recent survey conducted by the ICMR across the country has revealed that only 1 or 2 percent people have developed immunity for the COVID-19. It means that 98% population across the country is vulnerable and can get infected. Experts have warned that lifting of lockdown could lead to surge in cases as no one can predict how the virus will behave in coming days. People not developing any immunity towards the virus means that herd immunity won’t come so soon and till then chances of virus transmission are very high. So, we should be prepared to tackle more cases. The lockdown being lifted doesn’t mean that virus has gone. It’s very much there and we have to take all the precautions to keep it at bay. Social distancing, hand-hygiene and wearing masks are mandatory. Congregations, unnecessary travel and big meetings have to be avoided. People should bear in mind that till date neither a vaccine nor medicine have been found to treat this deadly virus. The only heartening thing is that the Union Health Ministry has claimed that the recovery rate in India has crossed 50% mark and the mortality rate is not that high. Experts are of the opinion that nothing can be said about the efficacy of the vaccine, which the different countries are claiming will be developed to tackle the virus. It may take many months or even a year to know whether the vaccine will work or not. The government’s decision to revive the economy seems to be based on permutations and combinations, which the helmsmen are hoping will work. It seems that low mortality rate and more and more people getting cured has encouraged the government to go ahead with its plan to unlock the country. The only worrying factor seems to be that the number of cases, are increasing with each passing day. The COVID-19 curve has not flattened yet. Situation in Jammu and Kashmir continues to remain grim vis-à-vis number of people testing positive for the deadly virus. The main concern of the people in the J&K UT is whether health infrastructure will be sufficient to tackle the cases which have surpassed 5000 mark in J&K. But the doctors are of the opinion that people with mild symptoms and the bones who are asymptomatic can be treated at their homes and they are advising home quarantine for such people. Everyone is of the opinion that testing holds the key and the government should work on acquiring COVID-19 testing kits which could be made available in the open market. The bottomline is that we have to keep our fingers crossed and watch how the virus behaves. |
