Tourism revival could prove disastrous
6/21/2020 11:51:21 PM
The Jammu and Kashmir Government mulling to keep all the tourism activities shut for now in the Union Territory due to the outbreak of COVID-19 is a wise decision it will help in keeping the numbers of positive patients under check.
The lockdown has been lifted and steps have been taken to revive the battered economy, but the threat of COVID-19 is very much prevalent and it continues to take lives. There has been no decline in the number of positive cases. The curve has not flattened yet. Reopening tourist spots in J&K amid the prevailing COVID threat can deteriorate the situation further.
No one can deny the fact that people associated with tourism in Jammu and Kashmir have been pushed to the wall and they have suffered immensely. The tourism players in Kashmir have been the worst affected. But the government is not in a position to take any chances. The revival of tourism industry especially in Kashmir at least for few more months looks impossible.
People who are pitching for reviving the tourism sector should understand that allowing people to move freely can add to the confusion. It’s not for the first time that tourism has been hit in the Kashmir. The tourism sector has suffered since the outbreak on insurgency in Kashmir in 1989.
Shutdown calls and orchestrating stone pelting in Kashmir was the main business of the separatists and Pakistan stooges till the recent past. The Pakistan sponsored terrorists left no stone unturned to ruin every season in Kashmir for the past three decades. Despite that tourism sector survived and once the pandemic is over it will once again get revived. People who are beating their chest for tourism sector getting hit should look back at the past.
The government needs to ensure that Tourism Department which had spent crores at the pretext of promoting Kashmir as a favourite tourist destination is kept under check so that it spends no more money on just promoting Kashmir. Whenever, the pandemic ends the government should formulate a policy to ensure that equal amount of money is spent on promoting Jammu and Kashmir as tourist destinations. Just focusing on Kashmir is being unfair.
For time being the chapter of reviving tourism in Kashmir should be closed as the priority for everyone is the safety of people and it cannot be compromised with for appeasing just a section of a society.
