NC omits out Omar Abdullah from joint statement on Article 370 restoration | Behind the Veil! | | Early Times Report
Jammu, June 22: The recent statement issued by National Conference over the restoration of Article 370 has raised many eyebrows as the handout has intriguingly omitted out the name of former Chief Minister and party’s vice- president Omar Abdullah. The statement issued jointly by the NC leaders Dr Farooq Abdullah, Mohammad Akbar Lone, Hasnain Masoodi and the senior party leaders Mohammad Shafi Uri, Mian Altaf Ahmad and Devender Singh Rana demanded the restoration of J&K’s special status that was scrapped by the Centre last year. “We demand immediate annulment of all the 5th August 2019 decisions and restoration of the 4th August 2019 Constitutional position of Jammu and Kashmir”, the statement said. It stated that revocation of 5th August 2019 decisions and unconditional dialogue with all the stakeholders is pivotal to the lasting peace and prosperity in the region. The NC statement said that there is need to restore special status of Jammu and Kashmir and the constitutional guarantees extended from time to time under binding covenants, unconstitutionally, arbitrarily and unilaterally were taken away on 5th August 2019. However, what has raised several eyebrows was the absence of Omar Abdullah’s name in the joint statement. He the vice president and former chief minister of the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir was ought to have a major say in such a significant handout. “It all looks fuzzy. Omar has been maintaining a very stoic silence over the Article 370 abrogation and hasn’t made his stand public so far. It has also hinted that somewhere something is going wrong within the rank and file of National Conference,” says a party functionary. Meanwhile, a senior NC leader divulged that Omar’s name not figuring in a joint statement is not worrisome in any way as the party vice president is well within his powers to issue a separate statement whenever he deems it necessary. “He can issue a statement and make his stand public whenever he wants. You cannot coerce him to issue a statement at a specific time. It is his wish when to say what. He is a free man now,” says the NC leader. There was a glint of rebellion found within the NC recently when Omar’s close aid while trying to sideline Article 370 fiasco pitched for internet restoration and release of political prisoners via a newspaper op-ed. He was later ridiculed by his senior colleague who termed his remarks, not in alliance with the party’s basic stand. |
