SUNDERBANI, June 25: Lakhs of rupees have gone down the drain in this tehsil of Rajouri district as a water storage tank constructed by the Jal Shakti department has developed leaks merely days after being commissioned.
Sources told Early Times that some months back the Jal Shakti department awarded the contract of construction of overhead water storage tank in the ward number 6 of Patrara Panchayat to a contractor. The construction of the water storage tank was completed few days back and was commissioned.
“The residents of the entire Panchayat especially those living in the ward number were happy that they would get round the clock clean drinking water after the commissioning of the project. The joy remained short lived since the water storage tank developed leaks barely few days after being commissioned,” said sources.
The locals of the Panchayat have alleged that sub-standard material was used by the contractor in the construction of water storage tank and the concerned department did not bother to check the quality of material while the work was going on.
They said that lakhs of rupees have been wasted due to sheer negligence of the department.
The case should be handed over to the Anti-Corruption Bureau and First Information Report (FIR) should be lodged against the contractor and officials of the department,” said the locals including Sarpanch Yashpal.
The locals demanded that the water storage tank should be reconstructed so that they don’t suffer due to the absence of clean and potable drinking water. The concerned Assistant Executive Engineer Jal Shakti department dropped the call after being contacted by Early Times.
