Govt going slow on revision of Minimum Wages at par with Central Act | Despite rising inflation, revision not held in last 3 years | | EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, June 25: Ever since the Jammu and Kashmir has been converted into Union Territory, the demand for implementation of Central Act on Minimum Wages Act in the newly created UT among the labourers working in industries factories has been getting momentum but administration seems to be non-serious to make it happen here. Sources told Early Times that although UT Administration implementing all central laws here but in case of implementation of Central Minimum Wages Act, the administration has been going slow on the issue. “Not only this, even it has been three years that the Minimum Wages have not been revised despite the fact that inflation has increased and the rates of essential commodities have seen enormous hike. Last time, the minimum wages were revised in 2017, which has lost its relevance due to steep rise in inflation due to which it has become difficult to manage in current time,” they informed. They further said that the revision of minimum wages has to be done within 2-5 years depending on the rise in price index. The present unskilled wages in JK UT is Rs 225 per day while in other UTs it is Rs 427 per day like in Chandhigarh UT. “Government should initiate the process to make proposal for the revision of Minimum Wages and the rates decided by it should be announced in public domain for their views as it takes months for finalization of the minimum wages,” they said further adding that if government cannot implement Central Minimum Wages Act, then at least it should revise the minimum wages so that unskilled laborers can manage their livelihood in present circumstances when inflation has risen. |
