Hawala allegations put BJP in dilemma for new SMC Mayor | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT
Srinagar, July 3: Amid serious allegations of illegal money transfer worth millions against a corporator of the Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC), infighting has started in Bharatiya Janta Party in support of such a candidate for being the new Mayor of the SMC. Sources said BJP office has received allegations against the SMC corporator who is expecting support of the national party in getting him elected as Mayor of SMC. Sources said the party has received allegations that the said corporator has purchased property in the United Arab Emirates through a hawala operator who is presently under detention in connection with a case being investigated by the National Investigation Agency. Sources said while the BJP leadership in Kashmir was already divided over the opinion of giving support to such a face, the new allegations have widened the divide. While the majority of BJP leaders are against the former Mayor Junaid Mattoo against whom corruption charges have surfaced, the allegations of money laundering for investment in the United Arab Emirates have added to the complication of the issue. Sources said some of the leaders have already brought the matter to the notice of the BJP leadership in New Delhi. Sources said while some of the BJP leaders recently called a meeting to discuss the issue in Kashmir, the party has decided to hold a formal meeting at its head office in Jawaharnagar area of Srinagar to decide the future course of action. It is pertinent to mention that the SMC Mayor was recently removed from the chair after a no-confidence motion was passed against him. The BJP leaders have already demanded a probe into the allegations of corruption against the former Mayor while the party has been looking for an alternative. Recently a senior BJP leader told media that the party had not held any meeting with the corporator against whom allegations of buying property in the United Arab Emirates have surfaced. Despite repeated attempts the BJP leaders were not available for comments. |
