JAMMU, Aug 29: Hockey J&K UT organized a programme at KK Hakku Stadium to mark the occasion of National Sports Day observed every year in memory of Hockey wizard Major Dhian Chand whose birth anniversary falls on August 29. Viney Kumar Sharma, Superintendent of Police Narcotics and Drug Control J&K UT was the chief guest on the occasion. He paid floral tributes to Major Dhian Chand. Speaking on the occasion, Sharma said that sports can play a major role in defeating the drug menace from the society specially youth. He asked the youth to remain alert and avoid interaction with bad elements of society. He further added that Major Dhian Chand was born in 1905 at Allahabad later shifted to Jhansi and was widely regarded as the greatest in the history of the Hockey sport. He was known for his expertise in extraordinary goal-scoring feats, in addition to earning three Olympic gold medals in 1928, 1932 and 1936. Earlier, Dr Taran Singh, general secretary of Hockey J&K, welcomed the chief guest and participants. He said that to obey the government directions a few members of hockey J&K were invited during the corona weekend lockdown. Rajiv Sharma, noted industrialist, presented memento to the chief guest while Ashok Singh Manager KK Hakku Stadium presented vote of thanks.
