If J&K were part of China, A Hypothetical perspective!
8/30/2020 1:37:52 AM
Ravinder Jalali

Recently we had fierce clashes in eastern sector of Ladakh where we lost 20 soldiers and at the same time inflicted heavy causalities on Chinese forces. Although they did not mention the number of causalities from their side but accepted that they have also suffered immensely. The 2020 China-India skirmishes are part of an on-going military standoff between China and India. Since May 2020, Chinese and Indian troops have engaged in aggressive face-offs and skirmishes at locations along the Sino-Indian border, including near the Pangong lake in Ladakh and the Tibet Autonomous Region, and near the border between Sikkim and the Tibet Autonomous Region. Additional clashes also took place at locations in eastern Ladakh along (LAC).The revocation of the special status of J&K in August 2019, by the Indian government has also troubled the Chinese.
Despite all the above facts let us have a hypothetical situation where J&K may be administered by China, what would be the implications for the people of J&K. First of all let us see what our Home Minster said in Parliament while presenting J&K reorganisation bill in August 2019 that POK is also our part and we are determined to take it back which was a step in right direction. It is not only POK but if you see that it is whole of J&K of Maharaja Times i.e. 1947 includes Aksai Chin, Gilgit-Baltstan, To give the details the entire J&K comprising of Gilgit Baltistan aprox 63000 Sq kms, Jammu 36000 Sq Kms, Kashmir 22000 Sq Kms and Ladakh 101000 Kms and total coming to 222000 sq. kms. Out of this what we have with us is Jammu 26000 Sq. Kms, Kashmir 16000 Kms and Ladakh 59000 sq kms and total 101000 sq kms with our India. So we have just half of J&K with us in area and more than half is with our neighbouring rather enemy countries. Part of our country which was illegally occupied by Pakistan, comprising of about 6000 kms has been ceded by Pakistan to china. Who does not want the entire J&K to be united? If we want to see the united J&K, we have to liberate POK from Pakistan, take back Gilgit-Baltistan from Pakistan and also liberate 42000 sq kms which includes Aksai Chin from China. Now everybody understands how simple or difficult is to get all these tasks done to see united J&K. First probability can India unite J&K? And wrest all the land occupied by the enemy countries? Everybody can guess. So far Pakistan is concerned it is not only doubtful but impossible because it is already de facto under chines occupation. It may not be legally but technically, Pakistan has been under the occupation of China. CPEC is already under way which runs through POK and other areas, which Pakistan has illegally occupied. Pakistan has no guts to dictate to China. In POK voices of dissent has already risen. Even in Gilgit-Baltistan people have expressed fears about Chinese occupation. Pakistan is already under debt trap of China. It is because of that Pakistan is not raising voice for the Muslims of Uyghur, China. For China it seems to be possible because it has already occupied part of J&K and to have control of POK it will not face difficulty and if we handover the occupation of our J&K to China, we can see united J&K which seems to be otherwise impossible.
Now let us see the merits and demerits of such a hypothetical situation. Let us start with demerits. Yes the greatest demerit will be the rogue elements of political parties will be deprived of their hegemony and will find themselves on roadside or in the jails. They will lose power which they manage by hook or by crook and exploit the people. These rogue elements will not be able to exploit the masses and will be accountable for each and every act of theirs. If you will go by the merits, these will be endless. First merit will be the consolidation of our erstwhile state of Maharaja Times which was stretched up to Gilgat Baltistan and to borers of Tibet. They will be able to handle and manage it as a single entity. Secondly, the greatest problem of electricity will solved and there will be 24*7*365power supply without fail. Despite the lapse of more than 70 years there is no sufficient power supply despite the vast claims by Govt,, that we have ensured power supply. All the successive government have failed in this regard. May be the leaders are not aware of the power shortage faced by the public because the corruption is at rampage and they have special power supply lines. Water supply will be regularised. At present we do not have regular water supply, not to talk of quality. Now see the conditions of roads. They have not been mostly repaired or constructed for the last several decades. Even if there are some repairs or construction of new roads, these are confined to VIP areas or repaired at the time of closure of financial year to draw out financial bills. These roads get damaged immediately after first rains. In the same year the same road (in VIP area) is repeatedly repaired and there is no query or audit, who would say that why a road, which has been repaired only a few months backs, needs further repairs. This loop hole will end. Despite lapse of 7 decades we are not able to connect Jammu and Srinagar with a reliable and round the year road and not to talk of Srinagar-Leh or Leh to Zanskar road which is not only for the convenience of people living in these areas but has strategic importance which we have not been addressed. May be we do not know the importance of the area. Now with skirmish with China In Ladakh area we understand how important is this toad and zojila tunnel. Now see how China has made inroads in Tibet and other areas leading towards border areas which remain open round throughout year. Had the J&K been part of China, there would have been network of highways with in J&K including Ladakh.
The sovereignty and integrity of nation is more important than those who manage it. If our people are not able to manage our nation is it not worthwhile to lease it out to some other power who can protect our borders like we privatise any other corporation for its effectiveness? Same way we want effectiveness of the governance and if we cannot deliver, we can outsource it in the interests of our beloved nation. Lease out does not mean that we will lose sovrnighty but it is contract. We have seen how Hong Kong was handed over to China after its lease of 90 years with British ended in 1997.
China has the world's largest outbound tourism industry. In 2018, more than 140 million outbound tourists travelled to different parts of the world. Even if half or quarter of these tourists visit our state, economy will boom. Chinese have a per capita income of 5 times of what we have and GDP is also 5 times of our country. Lastly all the terrorist outfits, radicals and their supporters and masters all across the country and globe will shut their mouth and close their shops. Radicals will be dealt in a way which will be suitable to their crimes.
