Ensure adequate security of health workers, take strict action against offenders: DAJ | | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, Aug 31: Ever since the onset of the coronavirus outbreak, amid the fear and panic surrounding the novel virus, there have been an alarming number of attacks on healthcare professionals across the country. While the frontline workers are putting their lives at risk and fighting the outbreak head-on, people are not valuing the healthcare workers’ immense efforts and life. Doctors of District Hospital Samba under the banner of Doctors Association Jammu staged protest against the administration and police officials for their failure in providing security as well as their inefficiency in taking strict action against the culprits who mobbed into the emergency premises of District Hospital Samba and threatened to burn the hospital and ambulances, an incident which was reported to the police authorities yesterday. After a gap of 24 hrs, when no legal action was taken against the culprits, doctors from district hospital samba staged a protest and raised slogans such as ‘Gundagardi Nhai Chalegi’. It is pertinent to mention here that a fake news was also circulated stating a heart attack patient was bound to wait for 1.5 - 2 hrs due to non availability of ambulance which was totally fake and baseless as ambulance arrived within 15 minutes and the whole process took 25- 30 mins right from first aid to referral of the patient. On duty Medical Officer, while talking to media persons, stated that a mob entered into emergency violating social distancing guidelines and threatened the doctor. The protesting doctors demanded that strict and stern action should be taken against the culprit and FIR should be lodged and also requested the medical authorities to increase the security of the doctors with CAPF personals as such incidents are oftenly reported in hospital where miscreant elements misbehave with doctors/ staff on duty without having fear of caught by the police authorities. Stating that such incidents had become an unforeseen ‘occupational hazard’, Dr Balvinder Singh, President Doctors Association Jammu said, “We, as healthcare professionals, are not as scared of infections as we are of being assaulted and abused by the very community we treat.” Singh appealed to the Director General of Police to kindly intervene and take strict action against those who are taking law in their hand and provide security to doctors in all government hospitals in the state.
