Influential contractor resorts to illegal earth cutting in Poonch | | | Rajesh Tandon EARLY TIMES REPORT
Poonch, Sept 2: A 140-metre bridge which connects 5-7 villages to main Poonch and Mandi areas took 14-years to get completed, the contractor who completed the bridge has now allegedly joined hands with the sand and grail mafia and is resorting to illegal earth cutting. Locals told Early Times that the work on the bridge built over the River Mandi at Timbra had commenced in 2006 and was completed recently. The politically connected local contractor had bagged the contract for the bridge and he took his own sweet time to complete the project. Locals alleged that after completing the bridge the contractor has joined hands with sand and grail mafia due to which poor population of the area is being pushed to the wall. “The illegal activities of the contractor are causing huge loss of agricultural land and personal property,” they added. Locals said that they have approached the concerned officials on many occasions but their pleas have fallen flat. “The contractor has joined hands with local panchayat representatives and is resorting to land cutting which can damage the Hydro Power project in the area. In this regard we have registered a grievance under no 999001500927 at LG’s Grievance Cell. Our complaint has been forwarded to Poonch administration but till date no action has been taken,” the locals claimed. They said that if earth cutting continues near Hydro Power project it can lead to a catastrophe. They demanded CBI enquiry into the freehand given to the influential contractor and urged LG to intervene. Executive Engineer PWD R&B Poonch refused to comment on the issue.
