Azad goes into silent mode | | | Former J&K Chief Minister and senior Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad has gone into a silent mode after signing a letter demanding change in party’s leadership. The meeting of the Congress Working Committee in New Delhi which was held last month witnessed fiery scenes as the party’s interim president Sonia Gandhi offered to resign. Former Congress president Rahul Gandhi took exception to the letter written by the party leaders and questioned their intentions. This led to the heated exchanges during the meeting following which Azad offered to resign from the party. Later the issue was resolved but since that day Azad has become silent. Prior to the CWC meeting and the letter episode, Azad had met Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, in New Delhi and by skipping the mention of Article 370 he had hinted that Congress party is comfortable with change in J&K’s status-quo. Speculations have been rife that Azad wants to return to J&K politics and he is trying to pave the way for it. But the differences which he has developed with the party’s top brass could lead to him staying at bay. The delimitation exercise in J&K is on and once it’s completed, assembly elections in the newly carved out Union Territory will be announced. Azad has to return to J&K to at least make an attempt to revive the Congress ahead of the assembly polls. If he continues to sulk the Congress will lose a star campaigner and a seasoned politician, who is capable of bringing back the disgruntled party leaders. There are reports that after the letter episode, many leaders who are close to Azad too have curtailed their activities in the UT and are waiting for his signal. They want Azad to return to J&K for the Congress to make a comeback. Azad remaining quiet has raised many questions and everyone is waiting for him to speak. Before he went into silent mode, he dropped enough hints that his party has accepted the Centre’s August 5, 2019 decision. Now it remains to be seen what would be his future course of action. The Kashmir centric parties have joined hands and are busy telling the people that they would get everything back. Will Azad forge an alliance with them or will he focus on Jammu region which till 2014 used to be the bastion of the Congress party? Or will he act as mute spectator? |
