17 years on, GCW Udhampur still awaits new hostel building | | | ASHWANI SHARMA EARLY TIMES REPORT UDHAMPUR, Sept 13: In a major setback to the government initiatives of providing best possible facilities to the students particularly girls, the Government College for Women (GCW) Udhampur is still awaiting a new hostel for the last 17 years. Sources informed that the new Women's college was started 17 years back at Battal Ballian on the outskirts of Udhampur town but with the provision of the hostel accommodation inside the old Women College premises. The old hostel has only eight rooms and about 3 kms away from the newly set up Women's College, they added "Not only the rooms at the old campus are insufficient but they are also not in good condition. Only 8 rooms are not enough for the ever increasing strength of the girl students, session after session," sources said. Insiders informed that around 150 girl students enrolled in the College need hostel accommodation every year but the present capacity allows such hostel facility only to 27 students which force other students to opt for rented accommodation at exorbitant rates. Sources further informed that the college administration had sent a proposal to the higher authorities after getting a Detailed Project Report (DPR) prepared from R&B Department for construction of 200-bedded hostel which was to incur about Rs 12 crore but it was rejected as the cost was very high. When contacted Principal of GCW, Udhampur said that we have sent a new proposal for a hostel with a 100-bedded capacity to R&B department for detailed project report and we are awaiting the response of R&B Department after which the detailed project report will be sent to higher authorities for sanction," she informed. |
