After spending lakhs, Lift Irrigation Scheme left incomplete | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, Sept 13: Irrigation Department not keeping the track of the ongoing Lift Irrigation Scheme in Jammu has left the project incomplete. According to the details available with Early Times after spending Rs 20 lakhs on the scheme the project has been dumped due to cost escalation. "Main purpose of execution of the Lift Irrigation Scheme was to increase the agriculture produce in the Union Territory. Lift Irrigation Scheme Aijpur Trewa was taken up in 2003- 04 at an estimated cost of Rs 2 crore to create 1200 acres of Irrigation Potential with an envisaged increase in agricultural produce by 45,000 quintals," sources told this news paper. They said, "The scheme remained incomplete due to non-installation of machinery as the civil works that were carried out were not upto the mark. An amount of Rs 20 lakh out of Rs 50 lakh was spent and remaining balance of Rs 30 lakh was kept in civil deposits." They said, "The department failed to monitor the project. The project should have been strengthened for effective implementation of the scheme and accountability should have been fixed at various levels for timely completion but unfortunately, nothing was done to make things happen." "Instead of taking corrective measures to complete the scheme the Irrigation Department-II Jammu prepared a fresh project and the cost was evaluated for the scheme to an amount Rs 4 crore and the project was submitted to government for approval. No serious efforts were put in by the department to resolve the issues and scheme was left half way," sources claimed. |
