SYJK demands inclusion of Punjabi as JK’s official language | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Sep 14: Sikh Youth of Jammu & Kashmir (SYJK) has termed the Official Languages Bill 2020 as discriminatory and has demanded its immediate roll back till the sentiments of the stakeholders aren’t addressed by those at the helm. For excluding Punjabi language in the list, SYJK chairman and senior Sikh youth leader Varinder Singh Sonu along with other youth leaders has expressed strong resentment. Sonu said non-inclusion of Punjabi language is discriminatory in nature and cannot be justified by the government at any level. “Punjabi is being taught in schools, colleges and universities and even JK Academy of Arts, Culture and Languages has full-fledged Punjabi section in its fold even though Punjabi is mother tongue of microscopic minority. It is worth to mention that several Muslim and Hindu scholars have rendered appreciable services towards the promotion of this language,” he said. He added that non- inclusion of the language in the list of official languages in Jammu and Kashmir is deeply hurting to the Sikh community. Furthermore, other Sikh leaders through the joint statement have said that resentment is already brewing among the people and particularly youth and if the issue is not addressed on priority, it may take the form of agitation. The leaders asserted further that they don’t have any grudge against any language but at the same time they we will not allow discrimination with Punjabi language at any cost. The leaders who were present on the occasion included Harvinder Singh Rissam, Amrit Paul Singh, Yashpaul Singh, Vinner Pal Singh Bali and Jasvinder Singh Wazir. |
