Mother's mission to empower son
9/15/2020 1:55:55 AM

Senior Congress leaders including
Ghulam Nabi Azad, Ambika Soni and
others who had signed a letter to seek change in party's leadership have been punished for raising their voice. They stand dropped from the list of general secretaries of All India Congress Committee (AICC).
The letter which was written to the interim Congress president Sonia Gandhi was signed by 20 party leaders. It had stated that process should be started to look for a new party president. The letter came up for discussion during the meeting of Congress Working Committee (CWC) held in New Delhi. It was a fiery meeting as former AICC president Rahul Gandhi took the senior party leaders head on and asked them why they had written the letter. During the course of the meeting Azad offered to resign from the party and the post.
After the meeting ended Azad and other leaders turned silent and recently Sonia Gandhi stripped the "old horses" of the all important post of AICC general secretaries. Now, it has become clear that the Congress leadership won't change and if anyone tries to strive for a change he or she will be shunted out. The dismal performance of the Congress Party in 2019 parliamentary polls under Rahul's leadership had created lot of resentment within the ranks of the "grand old party." After the poll results were declared Rahul Gandhi tendered his resignation from the post of the AICC president. He turned down the repeated pleas of his partymen to reconsider his decision, following which Sonia Gandhi was nominated as the interim president of the party. Many people believe that Sonia will continue to remain the interim president till Rahul once again decides to take over the reins. Chances about anyone else other than the member of Gandhi family becoming the Congress president look very bleak. Speculations have been rife that mother wants her son to be the boss and not her daughter (Priyanka Gandhi).
For time being the veterans stand sidelined and new faces have been given a chance to prove their mettle. After Congress's debacle in 2019 parliamentary polls, Rahul Gandhi, had tactfully blamed the veteran leaders for party's defeat. He went on record to say that new people are being suppressed within the party and all his major moves were thwarted by one or other leader. Sonia Gandhi clipping the wings of the "old horses" is an indication that mother is out to make her son all powerful.
