Gupkar resolution plunges Congress into quandary | Rajni Patel seeks statehood, prefers silence on roll back of last year’s August 5 decision | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Oct 13: The confusion and chaos within the ranks of the Congress could be ascertained by the contradictory stands the party’s leadership has been taking vis-a-vis abrogation of Article 370 and the subsequent decisions taken later by the Government of India. On October 12 during her Jammu and Kashmir visit, Congress party’s in-charge of its J&K affairs Rajni Patil advocated for the reservation of jobs for the locals of Jammu and Kashmir in the erstwhile state. The statement has raised eye brows as the party is signatory to the Gupkar resolution that demands reversal of all the decisions taken post August 5, 2019. Meanwhile, Ms Patil during her J&K visit demanded nothing more than the reservation of jobs for the locals here. She also demanded restoration of statehood and no reversal of the decision related to the abrogation of Article 370. “Our first demand from Congress and Mr Mir is that first of all there should be restoration of statehood. We will fight for it until our last breath. We along with our leader Rahul Gandhi, the entire Congress party will fight shoulder to shoulder alongside you for it and this state should get statehood back. This will be our demand,” she said. The statement issued by Ms Patil goes similar to what Ghualm Nabi Azad said earlier on March 13, this year when he met the freed NC president Dr Farooq Abdullah at his residence in Srinagar. Azad while talking to the media persons along with Dr Farooq pitched for the restoration of statehood for Jammu and Kashmir and preferred not to raise any issue pertaining to the abrogation of Article 370 and whether the order issued on August 5, last year should be rolled back. This is meanwhile for the first time that Congress party has sent feelers about being comfortable with the scraping of JK’s special status for now. When asked by the reporters about why instead of restoration of the JKs special status, he raised the issue about the statehood, Azad underlined the need for the resumption of political activities and audaciously ducked the question about the subtle acceptable of August 5 presidential order. More interesting to find was NC President Dr Farooq Abdullah maintaining stoic silence while Azad remained quiet on what the party earlier used to term as a core issue. Azad who has also served as the chief minister for more than two years from 2005 to 2008 in Jammu and Kashmir demanded restoration of statehood. He highlighted how JK in spite of being one of the largest states in India was downgraded to a union territory without any compunction. Meanwhile, this is going to be an interesting situation to watch that how the Congress party is going to fill out the chasm which is deepening with each passing day between the state unit and the national leadership of the party. |
