Lone’s closest colleague leaves him in disarray
Sajad’s PC may split soon
10/22/2020 11:51:36 PM

Early Times Report

Srinagar, Oct 22: Peoples Conference led by Sajad Gani Lone is now reeling under crisis due to one of its senior leaders deserting it and citing differences with the party chairman over issues related to the political debates swirling around Article 370 and Jammu and Kashmir’s special status.
Sources said that the senior leader of the People's Conference has been maintaining distance from the party activities and didn't even accompany Sajad Lone when the latter went to attend Gupkar meeting at Farooq Abdullah’s residence on October 16- two days after Mehbooba Mufti was released from detention.
The leader in question has been a former minister in BJP-PDP coalition and was holding an important post in the PDP. Soon after the PDP-BJP coalition fell apart on June 19, 2020, the leader deserted the PDP and joined the PC. The speculations were rife then that Sajad Lone was going to form the next government with BJP’s support.
Now, when the August 5, 2019 decision seems to have turned the tables around, the wedge between Lone and the senior leader only has been mounting. While this senior leader has termed Gupkar resolution not so important, Lone in his recent interview has in open called it as “the only way out.”
“This is the only way out. The issue at hand is bigger than me and bigger than all of us collectively. There is no way that we can individually strive and struggle to espouse the cause of the people of J&K. It has to be a collective effort. Power and the perks of power are a luxury which no self respecting politician of J&K can afford. We have all consciously decided to work together. I can assure you that my politics will be henceforth be irreversibly wedded to a collective cause and collective efforts. And we have all unconditionally agreed that we will work under the leadership of Dr Farooq Abdullah.
He has the stature and the experience to lead us all. And we all believe that he will rise above the National Conference and our internecine battles of the past and instead lead us all. Mehbooba despite being jailed ensured that the Gupkar declaration became a reality. She has been the ex-chief minister of the State. Yet her opinion was firm that Dr Farooq should lead us all. Tarigami played a pivotal role too,” Lone was quoted in the interview as having said.
Interestingly, while one leader opposes the declaration and has reportedly stated it is time to move beyond Article 370 abrogation, the other is adamant that the same should act as a guiding factor towards formulation of the party's future course of action.
