Mother, 2 mentally retarded sons struggle to survive | | | Ashwani Sharma
Early Times Report
Udhampur, Nov 12: Geeta Devi, 80, of village Pangara in district Udhampur is the only guardian of two mentally retarded sons and the family lives in a dilapidated one room house that can collapse anytime. Though the neighbours somehow manage to provide food to the poor family, villagers say that they can’t do it for long and the government should intervene. “Firsty, one room (kacha) house in which they live with an animal should be repaired to make it safe for them to live. The authorities should also work out a mechanism to ensure that they don’t die due to starvation,” locals said. They said that the health department should provide treatment to the mentally retarded sons of the old lady so that they can at least live their lives. A social activist and local leader said, “She kept on visiting panches , sarpanches and other leaders for the last 8 years for getting new (pakka ) house under PMAY scheme but no one helped her even her name was presented in 2011 census. Despite that she didn’t get any benefit under PMAY(Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana).” |
