Early Times Report
RAJOURI, Dec 8: Brick kilns in Rajouri district have been running illegally in violation of guidelines thus exposing residents in the vicinity to serious health hazards.
Sources told Early Times that brick kilns at Dhangri area are operating in contravention of guidelines. "The brick kilns are functioning without requisite documents. These are situated near residential area of village Dhangri. There is a school, temples just near to it. These brick kilns pose a threat to children and other villagers," the BJYM District President Harish Sharma alleged.
He said that as per rules the brick kilns near villages can't operate and they have to conduct annual plantation drives near brick kilns in order to reduce air pollution but it has been observed that no owner has followed this direction.
With the passage of time, it has been observed that people living near these brick kilns have developed several deadly diseases including TB, cancer, respiratory diseases etc. but concerned departments including Pollution Control Board as well as the district administration have virtually overlooked this serious problem, he alleged.
Local residents alleged that brick kiln owners are hand in glove with a few officials. They demanded a probe to investigate the permission of such brick kilns and violation of guidelines by them.
Raising serious concern on rising pollution by these brick kilns, a doctor while talking to this newspaper said that if pollution from these brick kilns continues then next generations will be born with several deadly diseases with.
When Early Times contacted the PCB official at Rajouri, he said that he has brought the matter into the notice of higher authorities. He further said that brick kilns owners have been asked to carry out plantation drive around the area.
