Jammu, Dec 17: Baby Aliza received the gift of hearing with a cochlear implant. The Indian Ocean Band donated a MED-EL Cochlear Implant to the girl child from Jammu. Rotary Club Jammu contributed towards the post implant rehabilitation. The surgery was done by the ENT Surgeon, Dr. Shalabh Sharma about a month earlier and the switch on of the cochlear implant was done on 17.12.20 by Dr. Navneet Gupta, Chief Consultant, Audiologist and Speech Pathologist, JK Electronic Ears Prime Speech and Hearing Clinic and Associate Professor at ASCOMS & Hospital, Jammu. The cochlear implant switch on event was attended by the members of the famous Indian Ocean Band and of course the parents and relatives of Baby Aliza. The parent and relatives of Baby Aliza were filled with joy seeing the baby respond to sounds for the first time in her life. The parents expressed their gratitude to the Indian Ocean Band, JKEE Clinic, Rotary Club Jammu and MED-EL for their support. A cochlear implant is an electronic device which is surgically implanted in children/persons with severe to profound hearing loss. After implantation, the device is programmed by an Audiologist along with Rehabilitation required to develop speech and language. There is lack of awareness in our society on hearing loss and solutions available to overcome hearing loss as a barrier to communication and quality of life which is why Baby Aliza’s story would be a story of hope for many.
