Statehood for J&K? | | | In October this year Union Home Minister Amit Shah had reiterated that J&K’s statehood would be restored soon but the Centre’s focus is on development. When the Centre revoked J&K’s special status on August 5, 2019, the Home Minister at the floor of the house assured that statehood would be restored as soon as the normalcy returns. Traditional Kashmir centric parties, National Conference, Peoples Democratic Party and others that have come together and formed Peoples Alliance for Gupkar Declaration (PAGD) to fight for the so-called bigger cause have been claiming that restoration of the statehood is not a priority for them. But the other parties like Apni Party have made it clear that the getting the statehood back is their first demand and they will continue to strive for it. Since the day Manoj Sinha has taken over as the Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir, he has made it clear that development of Jammu and Kashmir is a priority and it cannot be ignored. It means the Centre wants to infuse all its energy into J&K’s development and other issues are secondary. The restoration of J&K’s statehood is important for the political parties in Kashmir to re-emerge on the scene. If J&K continues to remain a Union Territory, political parties will have no major role to play. The only thing which the regional parties of J&K can bargain with New Delhi is the restoration of statehood. The way PAGD—an amalgam of Kashmir centric parties—is behaving it seems that it has got no priorities and no agenda. By contesting the DDC elections jointly, Kashmir centric parties have not done anything great. These parties cobbled up the alliance so save themselves from becoming irrelevant. However, the cracks within the PAGD have made it amply clear that this alliance is only confined to papers only. Kashmir centric parties are caught between the devil and the deep sea. They are in the midst and don’t know what to do. Politics in Kashmir has never been so difficult. These parties should realize that restoration of J&K’s statehood is must for their survival. If these political formations keep on harping about getting Article 370 back and seeking the help of enemy countries for its restoration, their leaders will end up in a soup. They need to mend their ways and talk about the things that can be achieved and restoration of J&K’s statehood is a possibility. |
