Save Your Jobs | | | The Jammu and Kashmir government amending service rules for its employees has put the public servants in a tight spot. In October this year, the Jammu and Kashmir amended the Article 226 (2) of the Jammu and Kashmir Civil Service Regulations for a provision to retire at any time any government servant in the public interest after he has completed 22 years of service or attained 48 years of age. Speculations are rife that the government is preparing the list of deadwood and axe is going to fall on the non-performers. In the past former political dispensations on many occasions had acted against the non-performers in the erstwhile Jammu and Kashmir State. The ones who were sacked easily used to get their jobs back due to rules not being stringent. Now, the time and rules both have changed. J&K is a Union Territory now. If any employee is terminated at this point of time, he will not get his job back. The steps which have been taken by the J&K administration are aimed at making the employees accountable. The public servants who used to believe that they are above the law and their jobs will remain secured forever have been told in the clear terms that they are no “holy cows” and the ones who don’t perform can end up losing their jobs. Since the day J&K has turned into a Union Territory the work culture in the government offices has improved. The employees who used to believe that they can make people wait for as long as they want have realized that they are being watched and if they don’t mend their ways they will end up in a soup. The biggest factor which has helped in making the government employees accountable is that a clear message has been sent that no one can ignore the aspirations of a common man and these employees are paid for serving the common masses. The rule of so-called “aristocrats” has ended and their courtiers stand terminated. Their disciples who used to thrive under their patronage have been left in lurch and they have nowhere to go. If they want to save their jobs they will have to fall in the line, otherwise they will be left unemployed like their political masters. |
