Amid rumours of Assembly polls Delimitation | Commission likely to visit J&K next year | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Dec 28: Amid rumours of Assembly elections in the Union Territory (UT) of J&K, the Delimitation Commission has intensified its activities after successful conduct of first-ever District Development Councils (DDCs) elections in J&K. Members of the Delimitation Commission are likely to visit J&K earlier next year to get authentic information from the ground. Although the Commission has started work from Delhi, it could not gather authentic information from ground level due to outbreak of Corona pandemic. Reliable sources said that since its constitution the panel has already gathered especially profiles of all the 20 districts of J&K beside population ratio and demography of these districts. Successful conduct of DDCs elections across J&K has fueled rumours of early Assembly elections but there is no official confirmation in this regard. The Early Times in its report on December 16 had reported that the Panel will accelerate its working after completion of the DDCs elections. The panel will start working at grass-root level to prepare flawless report for redrawing assembly constituencies before assembly elections in J&K. As per the Reorganisation Act of J&K 2019, Ladakh UT will have no Assembly while J&K UT will have Legislative Assembly. It was also announced to redraw assembly constituencies in J&K. Assembly elections will be held in J&K only after this panel will submit its recommendations for demarcating Assembly segments in the UT of J&K. In March, the Centre had constituted a delimitation commission, to be headed by former Supreme Court judge Ranjana Prakash Desai, to redraw Lok Sabha and assembly constituencies of the Union Territory. According to Section 60 of the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, “...the number of seats in the Legislative Assembly of Union territory of Jammu and Kashmir shall be increased from 107 to 114...” Out of these, 24 seats are in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. So effectively, the seats will go up from 83 to 90. The Delimitation Commission is headed by Justice (Retired) Ranjana Prakash Desai and comprises Sushil Chandra, Election Commissioner and Hridesh Kumar, the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) J&K. |
