Year Ender 2020: Cong’s existence at stake in Jammu region | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Dec 28: Year 2020 is the worst year for the Congress-the grand-old party of the country as party is fighting for its existence in plains of Jammu region which was once considered as citadels of Congress since years together. In the just concluded District Development Council (DDCs) elections, Congress could not open its account in Jammu, Samba, Kathua and Udhampur district. The party, however, managed to win only a single seat from Reasi district. Out of total 70 DDCs seats of these five districts Congress won only one seat. Ironically plains of Jammu were once considered as strong-holds of party. It was all due to these Hindu majority belts that Congress had enjoyed power with PDP from 2002 to 2008 and with National Conference from 2008 to 2014. But after the 2014 Assembly elections Congress is losing its base in Jammu region and erosion of the party continued in the year 2020. On the one hand base of party is eroding in Jammu region, most of the stalwarts of this region have deserted the party. In the year 2019, party’s face in Jammu region Sham Lal Sharma had quitted the party to join BJP. In the year 2020 many mass base leaders resigned from the party. Most of the mass leaders have resigned from the party to join the newly formed J&K Apni Party. What is more worrying for the party is that Kashmir based party National Conference is replacing Congress in Hindu dominated districts of Jammu province. In the DDCs elections National Conference candidates were runner-ups in most of the seats in plains of Jammu while Congress candidates were nowhere in the picture. |
