Dismal Performance | | | Despite winning 102 seats in the recently held District Development Council (DDC) elections, Peoples Alliance for Gupkar Declaration (PAGD) has been able to make its chairpersons in five districts only. The amalgam of Kashmir centric parties has collapsed even before it could have started off. When the PAGD was formed its leaders, including Farooq Abdullah, Mehbooba Mufti and others had claimed that they have come together for a bigger cause and power is not their aim. But soon after the DDC elections were announced the conglomerate jumped into the poll fray and decided to contest the elections collectively. The differences between the partners emerged soon after the mandates were distributed among the contestants. This snowballed into a major crisis after the allegations of proxy candidates came to fore and Peoples Conference led by Sajad Gani Lone pulled out from the amalgam. The candidates who had contested on PAGD tickets shifted their turfs after winning the elections. As on date the amalgam that was formed to challenge New Delhi stands decimated. Mehbooba Mufti and Abdullahs have not met each other even once after the election results were declared. The critics who were of the opinion that this amalgam won’t survive have been proven right. The Kashmir centric parties that had come together have always opposed each other on every platform. These parties staying together was out of question. President of Peoples Democratic Party, Mehbooba Mufti, who was instrumental in forming this amalgam as on date stands isolated as none of the leaders from other mainstream parties want to endorse her statements and views. Most of the Kashmir centric parties have accepted the change in J&K’s status-quo and they want to move along, but the PDP president seems adamant at raking up such issues that have been pushed under the carpet. The debacle of the PAGD is an indication that people are no more interested in the rhetoric and the slogans being raised by Abdullahs and Muftis. Masses have realized that these leaders have always sold old wine in new bottle to them and they have been taking them for a ride for the past 70-years. Things are changing fast and so is the political scenario of Jammu and Kashmir. These leaders should learn from their past mistakes and look towards the future rather than flogging a dead horse. |
