Jammu, Mar 11: Concerned over brewing Rohingya refugee crisis, United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) representatives, today came down rushing to Jammu, to meet RohangiyaMuslims to have an assessment of the situation on the ground. Four member team of UNHCR representatives led by one Kiri Attri External Relation Officer visited KiryaniTalab and adjoining areas of Bathindi in Jammu outskirts. The said team interacted with some of the Rohingyas and inquired about their wellbeing. Besides this, the representatives of UNHCR also met the chairman of one of the local NGO - Save the Children - located at KiryaniTalab, Bathindi. This team visited Jammu days after Jammu and Kashmir government detained 175 Rohingiyasin Hira Nagar jail that has been designated as holding centre. As per Union Territory (UT) administration, during the verification process, they found that these 175 Rohangiyaswere without a legal document. "That's why we shifted them to holding centre in Hira Nagar," said one of the senior officer. The representatives will also meet authorities on the issue and have a detailed discussion in this regard. The move to detain Rohingyas living in Jammu has created fear among the illegal immigrants, who are staying in Jammu for years. Many Rohingya shave already abandoned their habitation and fled towards far-flung areas.
