Govt’s Kitchen Garden Scheme benefits Srinagar | | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, Mar 17: The Kitchen Garden Scheme of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Department here has come as a “blessing for thousands of people” living in Srinagar, who avail benefits in the form of organic seedlings produced by the government facility. This year, the government looks ahead to produce around 50 lakh seedling at its specialized Kitchen Garden at Lal Mandi here. A total of fourteen polyhouses including eight hi-tech and six traditional polyhouses grow the seedlings, which are expected to grow around 35 lakh and 15 lakh seedlings respectively in 2021. It will be grown in “five rounds” where each round of raising seedlings spans over two months. Officials said this year in March alone, around 15 lakh seedlings were being sold at its garden outlet and that Rs five lakh revenue was estimated target for this month. “We have already made sales for over Rs four lakh and are hopeful of crossing the target soon,” said an official working at the Kitchen Garden. Many customers were seen waiting for their turn to buy the seedlings. When asked about the reason behind the public rush, the officials said: “Basically we produce organic seedlings, which also gives good yield so people prefer the same for their kitchen gardens as part of healthy living one can say.” He said Kitchen Garden Scheme also guides the customers about how to raise organic vegetables. “We equally spread awareness about growing organic vegetables, which are free from chemical fertilizers and thus promote healthy living,” the official said. He said exotic varieties like lettuce, red cabbage, parsley and celery were also raised for sale. The officials call the Kitchen Garden as a fruit of collective efforts of the department. “This is a teamwork. Everyone right from our gardener to higher-ups in the administration contributes in his or her capacity,” the officials said. |
