Geology & Mining Deptt 'least interested' to prevent illegal mining | Allegations baseless, says Deputy Director | | RAJESH TANDON Early Times Report JAMMU, Mar 21: The Geology and Mining Department seems to be least interested in curbing the illegal mining across Jammu division and has put the ball in the court of police. Sources informed Early Times that police have expressed its helplessness in curbing this illegal activity alone due to shortage of manpower and its men remaining busy in handling law and order issues. "It has been observed that the Geology and Mining Department has never taken matters of ensuring a ban on mining activities seriously," they said. The teams of Geology and Mining Department are hardly seen on those points from where these tractors and trolleys, tippers and dumpers carrying minerals illegally pass. Instead of taking action and discharging its duty honestly, the department has developed a habit of putting responsibility on police to curb the menace, they said. They further informed that although police have claimed that it always keeps a check on these illegal activities but due to it being involved in other duties and moreover due to non cooperation of the Geology and Mining Department the illegal mining continues unabated across Jammu. Most of the illegal mining activities take place in Jammu district. These have been witnessed along Tawi river, Akhnoor and RS Pura areas the officials of Geology and Minining Department inspect these areas only for the sake of formality. One more grave issue, which has erupted from this illegal mining are the accidents committed by vehicles carrying minerals, said local residents Rohit, Kapil and Aryan. They urged the Lieutenant Governor to pull up the Geology and Mining Department for not discharging its duties seriously. When Early Times contacted the Deputy Director Geology and Mining Department Rohit Khajuria, he said that the allegations are baseless. "We continue to take action against the violators and till date we have realized fines in crores." Meanwhile, Senior Superintendent of Police, Jammu said that police would remain vigilant to stop illegal activities and urged for coordination between the departments. |
