BARAMULLA, Mar 30: Two Municipal councilors and a Special Police Officer (SPO) were killed after militants had fired indiscriminately upon the Municipal Councilors near Lone building opposite SDH Sopore on Monday afternoon.
According to sources, there was a councilor’s meet in Sopore on Monday afternoon, after which militants carried a deadly terror attack on the councilors in Sopore town, in which three people were seriously injured including two councilors and a special police officer (SPO).
All the three injured were shifted to the nearby hospital for advanced treatment however; a councilor Reyaz Ahmad Peer son of Ghulam Nabi Peer of Ningli Sopore, SPO Shafqat Nazir Khan Son of Nazir Ahmad of Mundji Sopore succumbed to their injuries on way to hospital on Monday, sources told early times.
Sources said that another councilor Shamas-ud Din peer son of Ghulam Mohammad Peer was seriously injured in the militant attack at Sopore town who was later shifted to Srinagar hospital, but he also succumbed to his injury on Tuesday.
A top police official said that, soon after the militant attack, senior Police & CAPF officers along with their teams immediately reached at the terror crime spot to take access of the situation.
Preliminary investigation indicates that a local militant Mudasir Pandit of proscribed terror outfit LeT along with a foreign terrorist are involved in the said attack, said police official.
It is learnt that, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kashmir Vijay Kumar said that had the PSO’s present at the spot retaliated, militants would not have succeeded in their efforts.
IGP has also taken serious note of the poor and inappropriate retaliation by the PSOs of protected persons present on spot and directed SSP Sopore to put four PSOs under suspension.
He said four PSOs have been suspended while an OGW has been arrested who has revealed that the plan to carry out the attack was hatched by one LeT militant and a foreigner at his home.
Later on, in order to pay honour and respect to these martyrs, a wreath laying ceremony was held at DPL Sopore where floral tributes were paid to the martyrs. Senior officers of Police/SF laid floral wreaths on the mortal remains and paid rich tributes to the martyrs.
Police have registered a case in this regard under relevant sections of law and officers continue to work to establish the full circumstances of this terror crime. A joint team of security forces including Army, Police, SoG and CRPF launched a massive cordon and search operation at various locations to nab the assailants.
