JK Govt mulls to revamp non-functional schools | Merger of educational institutions on cards | | Early Times Report jammu, Mar 30: The Jammu and Kashmir Government is mulling to revamp the schools functioning across the union territory. According to the details available with Early Times the proposal to merge non-operational government schools with the ones functioning properly will be submitted soon. Sources said that the decision to revamp the educational sector has been taken in the backdrop of the mounting complaints about the dearth of infrastructure and other facilities in the state run educational institutions. "Most government schools in J&K are without drinking water, buildings and compound walls. Children in these schools are denied quality education," sources added. They said, "Jammu region has 762 schools without the library facility. More than 5000 schools in Jammu region have no play grounds. Nearly 105 schools in the region are functioning without headmasters or principals. As many as 1257 schools in Jammu have no subject teachers." "There were 683 schools in J&K that recorded less than 30 percent pass percentage in recently declared matriculation results. Of these 683 schools, 476 are in Jammu region," sources added. A survey conducted by the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (ASSOCHAM) has also revealed that nearly 80 percent schools in J&K are without electricity connections. "Now, in order to rectify the shortcomings, the Education Department is preparing the blueprint for this whole exercise. About 100 schools will be merged in Jammu alone. The number of children in these schools was only 10 to 15. The buildings of the shifted schools have been handed over to the administration," sources said. A survey conducted in 2015 had revealed that the number of students in about 3500 schools is either very low or the schools are running from rented buildings. "The process of merger of schools is going on at the departmental level. The proposal will be placed before the government for policy decision in near future," said a senior official. |
