Time to end discrimination by rechristening KAS as JKAS
4/21/2021 12:31:54 AM
Early Times Report

Jammu, Apr 20: Though Union government as well as Lieutenant Governor led state administration has been taking several steps to end discrimination with the Jammu region and it seemed to be opportune time to end another manifestation of it by adding prefix to Kashmir Administrative Service (KAS) as Jammu and Kashmir Administrative Services (JKAS) in official language.
Since decades, the nomenclature of administrative services in Jammu and Kashmir has been written as KAS despite the fact that the administrative services were meant for entire Jammu and Kashmir state and now of Union Territory of J&K but so far the nomenclature has still not added prefix J for Jammu region.
However, few days back the Lieutenant Governor had rightly named the KAS officer as JKAS officer, which has risen the hopes among the Jammuites that the age old discrimination in the nomenclature would end anytime soon. The official government orders including transfers and posting of officers, issued by the General Administration Department (GAD) are still being named as KAS officers, while in the police force, the administrative service officers have been called as KPS officers rather than JKPS.
“The official website of GAD has a separate option for KAS officers, rather than using JKAS officers, which should be renamed as JKAS, while on the same pattern, the KPS officers should also be named as JKPS officers”, an senior citizen of Jammu said, adding that similarly the KAS (Accounts) services should also be written as JKAS(Accounts) rather than giving impression of the services merely meant for Kashmir. Apart from discrimination in the allocation of funds as well as share in the developmental projects and employment, it appears that the Kashmir centric rulers used various methods to maintain their monopoly in administrative set up and making Jammu invisible in the nomenclature was another manifestation.
The Lieutenant Governor led Union Territory Administration should issue necessary directions to undo the injustices committed by the partial rulers of Kashmir.
