Munish Gupta asks govt to step in and ensure basic amenities | Residents of Shergarh Lane number 3 rue lack of basic amenities | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Apr 24: On one hand Jammu has been developed as a Smart city but residents of Sher-garh Lane number 3, which falls under the limits of Gandhi Nagar constituency, have rued the lack of basic amenities to their locality. Several villagers castigated the Union Territory administration for its failure to ensure basic amenities as they have been facing the problems of poor drainage system, unplanned development, poor sanitation besides erratic water and power supply. “The drains in our village are no less than gutters as they are choked with all sorts of filth. The blocked drains are breeding ground for worms and insects like flies and mosquitoes who hover around in our houses due to which an epidemic could break anytime in the area,” the villagers said, adding that on one hand the second wave of Corona pandemic has spread across the country and unhygienic conditions could compound the problems. Residents said that drainage system in the area has not been upgraded even as a large number of homes were built over the years adding that the drains in most of the area are choked due to which the filthy water gets overflowed whenever there are rains. Few locals also raised the dilapidated condition of lanes in the village which according to them are in terrible state for the last several years. “The lanes in the locality have not been metalled by the concerned department despite the fact that Gandhi Nagar constituency is in heart of Smart city”, the locals said. They also highlighted the irregular power and water supply. “Water supply is not only irregular but it is also inadequate. Water to the area is being supplied after a gap of three-four days and that too for a very short duration,” said the residents. While others minced no words in castigating the Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan said that the Union Territory as well as the Union government is busy in making tall claims of cleanliness but the poor sanitation in our village is indeed a reality check for all such notions. “The government has no concern for the villages like ours. Governments bother only for the affluent class. We have been made to live in hell like situation. We are now used to live along such inhuman conditions,” said villagers. Editor In Chief of Early Times, Munish Gupta expressed concern over the pathetic condition of the locality and appealed the Lieutenant Governor administration to step in and solve the problems of the area. Gupta further said that the second wave of Corona is more deadly and government should leave no stone unturned to provide hygienic conditions to the masses. |
