Jammu, Apr 29: Although authorities were very much aware that there is an acute shortage of doctors and para-medical staff in different hospitals but no timely action was taken. It was only during the second wave of the Coronavirus became so deadly authorities awake from deep slumber and initiated the process to extend services of contractual employees, who were appointed in Health and Medical Education in the month of March 2020. Amid a surge in positive cases and increasing death rate, Atal Dulloo, Financial Commissioner, Health and Medical Education issued a notification on April 26 for continuing service of contractual appointments in the department. “In view of the surge in COVID -19 cases, it is hereby ordered that the contractual appointments made in Government Medical Colleges, Srinagar and Jammu and in the Health Services Department, Kashmir, and Jammu in terms of Government Order No. 347-JK(MHE) of 2020 dated 28.03.2020, shall continue for a further period of six months from April 1, 2021or till further orders, whichever is earlier”, the order reads as. Ironically during the first wave of COVID-19, health authorities were very much aware that all health institutes including Government Medical College, Jammu-which caters to the need of 10 districts of Jammu, are facing a shortage of doctors and para-medical staff. But no step was taken to make permanent appointments in the health department. |
