RAJESH TANDON
EARLY TIMES REPORT

JAMMU, May 2: Although there is a strict ban on mining in Ravi belt yet illegal extraction of minor minerals has been going on unabated by Punjab based mafia in Kathua district.
The indiscriminate mining has posed a serious threat to the surrounding environment. JCBs can be seen excavating minor minerals in broad daylight from the Ravi belt and tippers loaded with these minerals can be seen taking it to Punjab. Continuous mining has destroyed the very ecology of the area.
Although few actions were taken in the past by the Department of Geology and Mining but this illegal malpractice is still going on which raises fingers on the credibility of the department by not taking regular action against mafia.
It has been generally seen that JCB and tippers entered into the territory of Kathua district of Jammu and Kashmir Union Territory and hundreds of tippers are loaded with minor minerals taking them to Punjab. Shockingly it is still unknown to the department as well as the government that who is behind this illegal activity.
The locals alleged that some politicians of Punjab state, who are in collusion with the concerned department and police of Kathua district for running this illegal activity of mining.
District Mineral Officer Kathua when contacted said that he had taken action against the illegal miners and FIR has been lodged. He further said that soon all those behind this illegal mining will be exposed.
