Despite having no ICU bed, GMC Anantnag declared tertiary care hospital | | | Saahil Suhail

Anantnag, May 2: In a surprising development the Government on Sunday declared Government Medical College Anantnag as Tertiary Care Hospital for Anantnag and Kulgam districts of South Kashmir which despite not having a single ICU bed for COVID-19 patients. The hospital was declared Tertiary Care Hospital to stop referral of from patients from district COVID care facilities to Srinagar. Divisional Commissioner Kashmir, Pandurang K Pole (IAS) issued the order declaring several hospitals including district hospitals as Tertiary Care Hospitals. The Government Medical College Anantnag (GMC) was declared Tertiary Care Hospital for Anantnag and Kulgam while as District Hospital Shopain was declared Tertiary Care Hospital for Shopain and Pulwama. According to this order, GMC Baramullah will cater the population of Baramullah and Kupawara. Similarly JVC Bemina will cater Bandipora, SKIMS Medical College Bemina for Budgam and CD Hospital Srinagar will serve as Tertiary Care Hospital for Srinagar. SKIMS has been reserved for the people of Ganderbal. However, surprisingly the Government Medical College Anantnag doesn’t a single ICU bed exclusively for COVID-19 patients. “From top to bottom everyone knows GMC Anantnag doesn’t have an ICU bed,” Medical Superintend Dr Iqbal told Early Times over phone on being whether they are raising the issue of ICU beds with the Government or not. As reported earlier, Government Medical College Anantnag has six ventilators but the hospital authorities haven’t setup any ICU bed exclusively for COVID-19 patients. The hospital doesn’t have manpower and other facilities required for setting up the ICU beds, officials at GMC Anantnag revealed. “This issue has been brought into the notice of government from time to time but the hospital administration hasn’t received any response from the Health and Medical education department,” they said. MS Dr Iqbal said that the flow of patients was also increasing with each passing day. “We have 70 oxygenated beds and today we have 72 patients so requested administration make other arrangements as well,” he said. |
