Committee constituted to examine illegal mining eyewash: EAW
5/5/2021 11:10:30 PM

EARLY TIMES REPORT

JAMMU, May 5: Environmental Awareness Forum (EAW) has termed the four member committee constituted by the government to examine illegal mining charges around river Tawi as an act of eye wash to save influential people for which public wants an impartial probe to know the facts. Bhushan Parimoo, President EAW, said that the allegations are of very serious nature but the the committee is drawn from the same department against whom the charges are leveled. One of the members , the oldest in the department is the key person, as alleged the key player in the dirty deals in the entire UT and stinks of corruption. Under such circumstance how one can expect justice, public believes that it gives enough indication to save those who are involved. Moreover illegal mining is not confined to a stretch of a few kms of river Tawi passing through Jammu for which the High Court of Jammu has taken cognizance in the Public Interest Litigation titled Dewakar Sharma and another Versus State of J&K and Others. But an undeniable fact is that the entire Union Territory of the Jammu and Kashmir is subjected to unscientific, illegal extraction on minor minerals from the rivers, streams and nallahs. Each and every river is crucial to the equilibrium of the environment, a “living organism. Environment Awareness Forum demands Government should instead constitute a high level committee headed by a retired or serving High Court judge, with a reference to inquire into the State sponsored illegal/unscientific mining which goes contrary to environment laws.
