Early Times Report

UDHAMPUR, May 28: Blaze at a pesticide manufacturing industry in the town forced thousands to spend the night away from their homes. While some moved to the places of their relatives in adjoining hamlets etc, there were many who said that they spend the night along the sides of national highway to save their lives.
Sources informed that flames and smoke started emanating from Danuka Agritech limited Industry at Battel Ballian industrial area in Udhampur here last midnight after which the panicked locals living within the radius of about 2km from the industry quickly moved away to save their lives and also that of their family members as there was an alert from the administration for that. The industry had hundreds of local employees including labourers.
“It was really an unforgettable night as on one hand we are fearing Corona infection while on the other hand we had to save ourselves from the poisonous smokes coming out from the pesticide industry,” Sushma , 23, a housewife said. Locals expressed their anger and questioned the effectiveness of the fire control system of the industry and its timely use.
However, with the timely action of district administration including police, Indian Air Force, Fire and Emergency Department the blaze was brought under control.
AD fire services G.L pandita said that by 4:00 am the fire tenders brought the blaze under control and adding that if the industry had used its own fire control system timely the damage would have been less adding that the inquiry will be initiated properly.
Locals have demanded that there should be a probe in the incident and such industries should be established away from residential areas means all chemical industries.
When contacted SSP Udhampur, Shargun Shukla said that police will take action after receiving report from the concern departments.
