Centre asks J&K to speed up smart metering process | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, May 28: The Union Power Ministry has taken serious note of the inordinate delay in installing smart meters in different parts of J&K to check power pilferage. The Union Ministry has set a target before the Union Territory administration for installing these meters. Highly placed sources said that during a review meeting, which held virtually on Friday, the status of privatization of electricity departments and utilities in Union Territories was discussed. Meeting also discussed smart metering rollout in UTs especially in J&K and Andaman & Nicobar Islands. Sources said that Union Government is very particular to install smart meters in all UTs and this process must be taken in a mission mode and be completed quickly. “Union Power Ministry is not happy with slow progress of smart metering in J&K where power pilferage is highest among many states and UTs”, sources said. In the month of October 2020, the J&K government had decided to install smart meters and will begin with the winter capital of Jammu and the summer capital of Srinagar. In the first phase, 20,000 meters would be installed and the process would continue in a phased manner till all of the 200,000 meters sanctioned under the Prime Minister’s Development Package (PMDP) are installed. With smart meters, people will be able to know their electricity consumption pattern and bill on a real-time basis, which will help them manage the load and also monitor their monthly bill. |
