VC SKUAST visits apple orchard at Sahib Bandgi Sant Ashram Ranjri
6/5/2021 12:03:01 AM

EARLY TIMES REPORT

JAMMU, June 4: Cultivation of apples is usually done in the high altitude areas where average summer temperature is between 21 to 24 degree celsius during the flowering and active growth period. It is impossible to grow apple trees in areas where summer temperature is as high as 45 degree celsius. However, a miracle of cultivating apples in such warm climatic conditions has happened at “Hariman 99” Summer Zone Apple orchard maintained by Sahib Bandgi Sant Ashram Ranjri, where more than 500 apple trees are grown with each tree yielding more than 200 kg of apple in a season. The weight of an apple ranges from 200 gms to 300 gms. The first tree in this orchard was planted in January 2016, by GN Naik, IAS (Retd) and Dr K C Sharma, Chief Consultant Surgeon from Udhampur with the blessing of Sant Madhu Paramhans ji, the head of Sahib Bandgi Panth. To witness this, VC SKUAST and Director of Research, Dr J P Sharma visited the India’s largest Apple orchard of this variety and appreciated the efforts done by Sahib ji to cultivate Summer zone apple in Jammu province. Sahib ji said that it is the product of hard work and dedication that such delicious and beautiful apples are grown in this extreme hot climate. He also explained the benefits of multi-cropping as farmers can produce major crops besides apples on the same piece of land, which will surely lead to the increase in farmers income. Sahib ji also said that if any farmer wishes to cultivate the apple, the organization is ever ready to help and guide them.
