GDC Chenani celebrates World Food Safety Day | | | EARLY TIMES REPROT JAMMU, June 8: Government Degree College (GDC) Chenani under the aegis of Azadi Ka Amrit Mohatsav Cell and its NSS unit, PRAYATNA organized a webinar to mark the World Food Safety Day under the theme 'Safe Food Now for a Healthy Tomorrow'.
The objective behind organization of the program was to enlighten the students that access to sufficient amounts of safe food is key to sustaining life and promoting good health, however, food safety has a critical role in assuring that food stays safe at every stage of the food chain from production to harvest and from preparation to consumption.
Dr Maninder Singh, Faculty member, Veterinary Sciences and Animal Husbandry, Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology, Jammu was the resource person on the occasion. Dr Singh stated that improving food safety is important as 600 million cases of food borne illnesses are reported annually and about 400,000 people around the world die every year after eating contaminated food and children under age group of 5 years carry 40 percent of food borne disease's burden. Dr Pragya Khanna, Principal of the College quoted that the day aims to draw attention and inspire action to help prevent, detect and manage foodborne risks contributing to food security, human health, economic prosperity, tourism and sustainable development. She said food safety is an emerging field in India and has avenues like jobs of food inspector, in food testing laboratories and various types of entrepreneurships. The programme was organized by Prof Mir Hafeez and Prof Sunil Kumar.
