Unemployment rate in J&K has increased: NITI Aayog’s SDGs index | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, June 8: NITI Aayog’s latest index of States and Union Territories (UTs) on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) has revealed that the unemployment rate has increased in Jammu and Kashmir during the last year. As per NITI Aayog’s, index unemployment rate was 5.4 percent in the year 2019 which has increased to 5.6 percent. Although there is a slight increase in the unemployment rate, it reflects those policies adopted by the government after bi-furcating the erstwhile state of J&K into two Union Territories (UTs) have not yet given desirable results. J&K has performed better than many states and UTs in NITI Aayog’s index in many fields but has failed to improve its position in generating employment. Sources said that UT authorities do not have the real dependable database of the exact number of unemployed educated and uneducated youth. According to the employment department, J&K had 82,395 registered unemployed educated and uneducated youth, apart from around two lakh unorganized workers and 55,000 youth registered under the Pradhan Mantri Shram Yogi Maan-Dhan scheme. The department said the number of unemployed youth could be much higher as the process of registration with the employment department was voluntary and not mandatory.
