NIA to probe Rakesh Pandita killing! | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, June 8: The elite National Investigation Agency or NIA is likely to probe the killing of the Bharatiya Janta Party leader and municipal councilor Tral, Rakesh Pandith by taking over the investigations from the Jammu and Kashmir Police, which have registered a case. Highly placed sources said the Union Home Ministry in New Delhi held a high level meetings to discuss the killing of the BJP leader, in Tral area of south Kashmir on June 2. The sources said the larger consensus at the meeting was that the probe into the killing be done by the NIA. It was reliably learnt that the family of the slain leader including his son have also sought a probe by the NIA. Sources said initial investigations into the case have suggested at some “unusual developments” which led to the killing of the councilor. Sources said the NIA would also probe if the leader was provided adequate security. “Mere two PSOs for someone who is the BJP councilor in restive Tral needs a deeper investigation,” said a senior official privy to the developments. Sources said the possible lapse on the part of police in Tral is also not being ruled out. “While there are allegations that it was a security lapse, it needs to be seen if it was lapse on the part of the police in Tral and also if it was a intelligence failure,” the official said on the condition of anonymity. He said given the questions that are surfacing with regard to the killing it was most likely that the NIA would take over the charge of the case from police in the coming days. It is pertinent to mention that three terrorists shot at and killed Pandith when he was at this friend’s residence in the south Kashmir area. The daughter of his friend was also wounded in the attack and his hospitalised. It was third killed of a councilor in Kashmir in 2010 and sixth killing of a BJP leader in a year. |
