Early Times Report
Jammu, June 8: In a bid to help people struggling to earn livelihood due to the ongoing COVID-19 crisis, an NGO in Jammu and Kashmir is providing free food to Covid 19 patients, their families and to those whose livelihood has been hit due to the pandemic. In these trying times, PHF has been relentlessly reaching out to the needy and helping them with Home Cooked Meals and ration kits through their 'Feed the Hungry Program.' Since 1st March, People’s Hut Foundation has supported people by providing 6900 Cooked Home Cooked Meals and has distributed 3500 Annapurna Ration Kits in Jammu and adjoining districts. Talking to the reporters about their work, Dr. Rohit Koul, Founder Director and CEO of the Foundation, informed that the relief work began from the day 1 of the march and will continue till the pandemic remains. Initially, the team started with distributing cooked meals but soon they realised that cooked meals are best for people affected with Covid 19, living on the streets, or walking and travelling to their native place. However, Underprivileged people including those whose livelihood has been hit badly need a long-term solution so we started preparing “Annapurna ration kits” that would sustain a family of four to five people for the duration of the lockdown. “Annapurna ration kit” comprises rice, pulses, wheat flour, oil, spices, salt, sugar, potatoes, and onions. For us one of the challenges was to identify the people in need and ensure everyone’s needs are met. "In a pandemic situation like this, it is not possible for only one organisation to work. So, a collaborative effort is extremely essential. So, we all came together and decided to work on this," says Dr. Karuna Kaul Kaur who heads Communication, Advocacy and Policy at PHF. "Once the lockdown gets over, I think we need to work on our livelihood and awareness about coronavirus, because COVID-19 is going to remain with us for some months.
